Landscape & Seascape inspired by the Westcountry

Living in Cornwall, I am fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the British Isles which throughout the year, is ever changing with the weather. What more could an artist want?

About Roger Holmes

I have painted most of my life whenever I could find the time which is not always easy thanks to the pressures of earning a living. Today, the urge to paint is stronger then ever and I am moving towards painting full time instead of designing websites which I have been doing since 1993. Previously I was a sign writer.

I am a self taught artist and my techniques and style have evolved over time by experimenting with different media, including: Oil’s, Acrylics, Pastels, Pencils and more recently, Watercolour which has become one of my favourite medium as it allows me to work fast and loose.
I would have liked to go on to study art after leaving school at the age of 16 but the opportunity to work in the shipping business in Italy was too tempting for my young mind.
While in Italy, I did get the chance to go to life drawing classes at the weekend tutored by Professore Liberti who was an established artist and teacher at the University of Genova. His teachings have been of great value to me over the years and I will never forget him.

Soft Pastels are by far the medium that I am most comfortable with and always find my self coming back to them after periods of working in other media, though today, rather then using purpose made coloured pastel papers, I really enjoy underpainting heavy watercolour paper with watercolours and then working in Pastel. Watercolour papers have plenty of texture and are able to hold more pastel without becoming clogged.

I enjoy surfing and in fact, used to shape, decorate and fibreglass my own Longboards.
As a surfer I am inspired to paint the wonderful locations around Devon and Cornwall and rather then painting surfers on perfect waves, I prefer to paint the raw beauty of the locations throughout the year, especially in the winter at remote locations (Secret Spots) when only experienced hard core surfers will take on huge powerful storm swell's.

The Westcountry is not just about the coast, inland, there are the vast open spaces of Bodmin and Dartmoor which almost create their own weather and are very dramatic at any time of year. There are beautiful woods and rivers, ever changing tidal estuaries and rolling landscapes.

More then enough inspiration for a life time of painting...

Periodically, I take on commissions to paint a particular landscape or seascape view. Sometimes it is not practical for me to travel to the location because of distance, in which case I can produce a painting if I am provided with good quality photography.

I also get asked to paint family pets and I am particularly fond of painting or drawing dogs.
Again, I will need good quality photographs before starting a commission.

If you would like to commission me, please contact me with your requirements using the form at the foot of this page.

This is where you can keep up to date with what I have been doing.

It has taken a while, but here it is. My new website which I have created to be accessible on the broadest range of devices and browsers, including: iPod's, iPhones, iPad's, Android and Windows tablet's and phones, Desktop PC's and Mac's.
The pages have been designed so that they elegantly re-shape depending on the device that is being used to view them which removes the need for separate websites for different devices.
I hope you find my web site easy to use, if you have a suggestion, please use the contact form to let me know.
